Move over Charlotte and Olivia - a wave of freshly minted Shire babies appears to be named directly after their mum’s third drink at bottomless brunch.

According to one local midwife, the hottest naming trend for baby girls born in 2025 includes Margie, Bellini, and Spritzleigh  - a bubbly new twist on the traditional “Leigh” suffix once reserved for Hayleigh, Ashleigh and Kyleigh.

“We’re not officially recording the reason for the name choice,” said the midwife, “but I will say there’s a lot of linen two-piece sets, Stanley cups, and lingering hints of salted rim coming through the birthing suite.”

The trend may even have cultural roots. Experts note that Chardonnay – once considered a mildly controversial baby name choice after Kath & Kim brought it into the national consciousness – may have paved the way for the brunch-inspired generation now emerging from the Royal and Sutherland maternity wards.

“The Kath & Kim effect definitely softened people up,” one baby name blogger told us. “From there it was just a matter of time before we met a baby Bellini.”

Meanwhile, several parents allegedly attempted to register the name Prosecco, before being told it contravened naming guidelines as it is a geographically protected term under EU law. One dad reportedly responded by asking if “Prossy” could be used instead, which he retracted soon after.

There are no rules, however, preventing names like Mimosa, Sangriah, or Tequila-Rose (hyphen optional).

A local early childhood teacher confirmed she already has “two Bellinis, a Margie, and a Cointrelle in one class” and has stopped asking for spelling clarification. “I just assume there’s a silent ‘gh’ or a random Y. If not, I add one.”

Centrelink has reportedly been alerted.
