LOFTUS - A quiet suburban street has become the site of an unlikely memorial this week, after locals organised a roadside vigil for a failed DIY backyard shed project that collapsed during construction, ending one man’s dream of backyard greatness.
The shed’s owner, Mark Dwyer, 39 - a project manager by day - had reportedly taken annual leave to assemble what he believed would be a straightforward personal project.
“I saw the brand name EZ-Shedz and assumed it meant easy,” Dwyer told the Sutherland Shire Gazette. “Turns out it was more like a warning label.”
Days later, the partially assembled structure has been wheeled to the kerb for council collection - or, as neighbours have since called it, “its final resting place.”
By Saturday evening, candles began appearing beside the wreckage, while residents quietly placed garden tools on their front steps in solidarity.
“It’s the least we could do,” said one mourner. “He gave that shed everything. You could see the hope leave his body with every Allen-key turn.”
Dwyer has since purchased a pre-built, vintage 1980s shed from his neighbour, enlisting four mates - paid in a slab of beer - to lift and carry it to its new home along the back fence. “It’s solid, reliable, and already assembled,” he said. “I’ll never fall for branding again.”
The vigil for the EZ-Shedz will remain until council collection day, now featuring a handwritten sign warning scavengers not to “try their luck with this one.”
