CRONULLA - Following this week’s revelation that pedestrians may soon be phased out of Cronulla Mall altogether, new details have emerged confirming the centrepiece of the proposed safety overhaul: mandatory flashing amber beacons for anyone still insisting on walking.

The beacon initiative, sources say, is intended to reduce the growing number of near-misses between pedestrians and eBikes now travelling through the mall with “festival-level confidence.”

“Pedestrians are unpredictable,” said a source familiar with the proposal. “They stop. They turn. They check phones. A large flashing amber light gives riders at least a fighting chance.”

Under the draft guidelines, walkers would be required to clip a rotating amber beacon to their waistband, pram, tote bag or loose linen shorts before entering the precinct - visually classifying them as a slow-moving object, similar to council vehicles, forklifts, or reversing trailers at Bunnings.

Early trials suggest the beacon is visible from up to 40 metres, providing crucial reaction time for approaching riders travelling at conversational-but-urgent speeds.

Sensing commercial opportunity, local serial entrepreneur Guille has moved quickly to launch a pedestrian PPE hire concept, offering beacons alongside optional helmets, shin pads and ankle guards for those “committed to walking but realistic about the risks.”

Plans include collection and drop-off stations at either end of Cronulla Mall, with casual hire and subscription options tipped to appeal to grandparents, pram-pushers and anyone attempting errands without motor assistance.

“People don’t want to own safety gear,” Guille explained. “They just want to survive the mall and get on with their day.”

Walkers are advised to stay alert, avoid sudden movements, and assume they are invisible unless actively flashing.

Because in Cronulla Mall, walking isn’t a right anymore - it’s a risk profile.
